India’s Union Cabinet has cleared four new semiconductor fabrication projects with an overall investment of around Rs 4,594 – 4,600 crore (approximately $550 million) in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh. These projects will greatly enhance India’s semiconductor ecosystem under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

Key highlights of the projects are as follows:

Locations and Companies:

Odisha: Two projects by SiCSem Private Limited and 3D Glass Solutions Inc. in Bhubaneswar’s Info Valley.

Punjab: Continental Device India Private Limited (CDIL) doubling its Mohali plant.

Andhra Pradesh: Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP Technologies) establishing a greenfield facility.

Technology and Production Capacity:

SiCSem (Odisha) will develop India’s first commercial Silicon Carbide (SiC) compound semiconductor factory, producing 60,000 wafers and 96 million packaged units per year. Applications cover defense, electric vehicles, railways, data centers, consumer appliances, and solar inverters.

3D Glass Solutions (Odisha) will establish a state-of-the-art semiconductor packaging facility with an annual output of 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 3D Heterogeneous Integration modules. Applications will be in defense, HPC, AI, RF, automotive, photonics, and co-packaged optics.

ASIP Technologies (Andhra Pradesh) will produce 96 million semiconductor units per year for mobile phones, set-top boxes, automobile electronics, and other consumer electronics.

CDIL (Punjab) will double its factory manufacturing 158 million high-power discrete semiconductor devices per year, such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky diodes, and electric vehicle, renewable energy, power conversion, industrial, and communications transistors.

Strategic Significance:

These initiatives are aimed at positioning India as an important participant in the international semiconductor supply chain.

They complement India’s increasing chip design capability backed by government support at 278 academic institutions and 72 startups.

The schemes are likely to generate over 2,000 direct skilled employment opportunities and numerous indirect employment opportunities, contributing towards the technological self-reliance of India and Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.

The total number of government-sanctioned semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission has now grown to 10 with total investment of approximately Rs 1.60 lakh crore in six states.

The government considers semiconductors to be a core industry essential to a developed nation, emphasizing the construction of a strong domestic chip production foundation and advanced packaging technologies.
